Media Partnership: CBIAS2023

Excellent science deserves excellent communication.

Background

This case study shows our role as media partners for CBIAS 2023, the Crick BioImage Analysis Symposium (London, UK), a flagship event bringing together researchers, technologists, and innovators working at the forefront of biomedical image analysis.

CBIAS is recognised as a key forum for advancing image-based methods in life sciences, spanning microscopy, quantitative image analysis, computational pipelines, and data-driven discovery. Supporting this event aligned directly with Zeeks’ mission: to enable accurate, effective, and impactful science communication for complex research domains.

Strategic Science Communication for a Specialist Research Event

Scientific symposia do not exist in isolation.

Their impact depends on visibility, accessibility, and sustained engagement; before, during, and after the event. As media partners, Zeeks supported CBIAS 2023 through a structured science dissemination strategy, designed to amplify reach while considering the scientific depth of the content.

Pre-Event Dissemination and Awareness Building

Ahead of the symposium, Zeeks developed targeted social media content to raise awareness of CBIAS 2023 within relevant research communities.

This included:

  • Clear, informative posts highlighting the symposium’s scope and scientific themes

  • Speaker and topic spotlights designed to engage both imaging specialists and adjacent disciplines

  • Messaging tailored for platforms such as LinkedIn and X (.. back then Twitter and a hub for scientists), where biomedical image analysts were active

The aim was to reach niche audience scientists, showcasing the science that would await them at the event.

Live Science Communication:

Real-Time Engagement at CBIAS 2023

During the symposium, Zeeks provided live tweeting and real-time science communication. This included utilising the knowledge of our director Dr Elisabeth Kugler, a biomedical researcher and internationally recognised expert in image-based analysis, with extensive experience in microscopy, quantitative image analysis, and tool development for biological research.

This allowed us to:

  • Use the correct terminology

  • Understand the novelty of talks/discussions

  • Condense appearing themes and topics

  • Provide context and relevant content links

Our approach was to create value-driven content, ensuring that posts accurately reflected speakers’ findings and novelty. So that even the scientists who couldn’t attend, were able to follow the general conference flow and learn about “conference gold nuggets”.

Accuracy in Biomedical Image Analysis Communication

Biomedical image analysis sits at the intersection of biology, computation, and data. Communicating research in this space requires responsibility - particularly in avoiding exaggerated claims or misleading interpretations. (This was before the rise of AI, but already highly challenging).

As media partners, Zeeks operated with a clear framework:

  • Faithful representation of scientific content

  • Respect for unpublished or preliminary data

  • Transparency and attribution

This approach reflects Zeeks’ broader commitment to responsible science communication, particularly in fields where research findings may influence clinical thinking, funding priorities, or public understanding.

Impact and Lasting Value

Through pre-event dissemination, live social media coverage, and expert-led communication, Zeeks contributed to:

  • Increased visibility of CBIAS 2023 across international research networks

  • Enhanced engagement during the symposium itself

  • A lasting digital footprint that continues to support knowledge exchange beyond the event

More broadly, our involvement demonstrates how specialist science communication agencies can add tangible value to research events. This can contribute not only attendance, but understanding, accessibility, and long-term impact.

Conclusion

CBIAS 2023 is a fantastic community-driven event that highlights the innovations in biomedical image analysis. Zeeks was proud to support the Crick BioImage Analysis Symposium as media partners, combining scientific expertise, strategic dissemination, and ethical communication practices.

As research becomes increasingly interdisciplinary and data-intensive, the role of expert-led science communication will only grow. At Zeeks, we remain committed to ensuring that complex science is communicated with clarity, integrity, and respect.

As always, by scientists, for scientists.
